Remote monitoring of insect pressure saves time and optimizes use of resources – producing more with less.

iSCOUT® is an insect trap with integrated electronics (camera system, modem, power source with solar panel) and sticky plate.

About
iSCOUT®

With the inspiration of helping the farmer to grow his crop in the optimal and most healthy way, Pessl Instruments GmbH, developed an optical high-resolution camera system, together with a computer vision software which is able to recognize insects from the photo.

Optical high-resolution camera system is embedded inside an insect trap, to remotely monitor insect pressure at fields.

We provide different types of traps, to cover a broad spectrum of insect species. All of the photos and data from computer vision software is displayed online, on a FieldClimate web portal.

Producing more with less

iSCOUT® is an insect trap with integrated electronics (camera system, modem, power source with solar panel) and sticky plate. It can be hung wherever in the field needed, due to its low weight. In the field, the device is self-sufficient, as it is powered by a solar panel and a battery. 10 MP camera takes high-resolution pictures of the sticky plate within the iSCOUT® trap.

Images are sent via LTE to the FieldClimate platform where they are analyzed with AI (artificial intelligence) software. The results are then visible on web or mobile devices. As a result, we see the photo with rectangles around the target insect, as well as summarized data of the daily count, targets in total and development of insect population during the season. Control is real-time and the collected data can be used for further analysis.

How many stations to install?

How many stations should be installed depends on the size of the field and the target insect. The distribution of insects within a field is often not homogenous – immigrated insects from overwintering sites are often more concentrated on borders whereas insects hatched from soil are clustered within fields, therefore we suggest using multiple traps in large field areas.

If different pests are monitored on the same location, different variations of iSCOUT® can be installed. The iSCOUT® can be used to monitor the first occurrence of pest species on the field site and to implement IPM strategies when needed. It can help us decide when we should start with mass trapping too.

iSCOUT® variations

iSCOUT® PHEROMONE

Designed and developed to catch insects with insect specific pheromone lure (codling moth, european grape berry moth, tomato leafminer and many other species). It includes a metal plate on which sticky paper and a pheromone lure can be applied.
Helicoverpa armigera – cotton bollworm caught with the iSCOUT® PHEROMONE

iSCOUT® FRUIT FLY

Designed and developed for catching fruit flies ((spotted wing drosophila, olive fruit fly, mediterranean fruit fly and many other species). Includes 3 mm nettings on entries, so that bigger flies (house flies) and other non targets are not able to enter the trap. Tank for feeding lure and metal plate with sticky paper are included. To catch and monitor bigger flies, nettings can be removed.
iSCOUT Fruit fly
Drosophila suzukii – spotted wing drosophila caught with use of iSCOUT® FRUIT FLY

iSCOUT® BUG

Designed and developed for catching bugs (marmorated stink bug halyomorpha halys and other species). It includes a metal bottom plate with black pyramid wings and has closed side entries. Once the bug enters the trap from the bottom, it is fixed on the plate.
iSCOUT Bug
Halyomorpha halys – brown marmorated stink bug caught with use of iSCOUT® BUG

iSCOUT® COLOR TRAP

Designed and developed to monitor sticky traps of different colors. The device comes with a high resolution camera and a holder for a sticky plate.

  • blue: flies, leafminers, …
  • yellow: leafminers, western corn rootworm, common pollen beetle, …
  • white: apple sawfly, plum sawfly, plum fruit sawfly, raspberry beetle, …
