Project information
Coordinator: ATOS (Spain)
Duration: 36 months, from November 2017 to October 2020
Total Budget from EU: € 2.999.062.50
Description and mission
Proposes an e-Infrastructure, which addresses agriculture, land monitoring and energy efficiency for a sustainable development, as a way to support planning policies.
Within the EUXDAT project, we act as one of agriculture experts, providing ideas on potential precision farming recommendations based on integration of satellite data and data from our own ground IoT hardware provided via adequate APIs. In particular, we work on a development of biomass and zoning maps for seeding, spraying and fertilizer applications based on a) Sentinel-2 data, b) data from the METOS soil moisture sensors as well as c) data from smartphone cameras.
During these days, experiments are being conducted on 6 different fields in Styria, Austria, to develop an improved biomass estimate from Sentinel-2 for wheat, corn, oats and rye using smartphone camera-based application (FieldGreen). The results demonstrate a high correlation between Sentinel-2 and FieldGreen and thus the future ability to integrate farmer’s camera acquisition with the satellite acquisition. Such integration was shown especially relevant during May/June 2017 and 2018 in Styria when early season heavy rains and cloud coverage hampered the Sentinel-2 data availability.
Our role in the project
PESSL will participate mainly in WP5, WP6 and WP7, since our main contribution will be to the project pilots, providing data generated by our weather stations, through the adequate APIs. PESSL will also participate in the dissemination activities, in line with the rest of partners. In WP7, PESSL will provide our vision about the business models, participating in the definition of sustainability and exploitation plans.
